DEMOCRACIA TRANSNACIONAL
TRANSNATIONAL DEMOCRACY

RESUMO
São várias as possíveis acepções de democracia transnacional, sendo as
mais divulgadas a busca de instrumentos para colmatar o deficit democrático das
instituições internacionais, em particular as responsáveis pela governance económico-financeira global, a par das tentativas de ingerência de Estados e instituições
supranacionais em sistemas políticos de Estados soberanos, com o propósito de
“impor” o modelo ocidental de democracia. Mas é estranho que o Ocidente insista
nas virtudes do seu modelo democrático numa fase em que o mesmo atravessa
uma crise profunda, caracterizada pela redução da participação democrática dos
cidadãos, pelo regresso de oligarquias aos partidos políticos, pelo ressurgimento
dos populismos, pelo aumento da corrupção e até pela mercantilização da cidadania. Numa era em que o poder público se ajusta a novos parâmetros sociais e
tecnológicos, a democracia tarda em reinventar-se e esta demora pode comprometer a sociedade liberal.
